Leading Ladies: A Spotlight On Fiona Grayson

Fiona Grayson is an entrepreneur and founder of She Can. She Did. - the online platform which allows aspiring business women to find and connect with other entrepreneurial women. Her success has given an insight into the opportunities available for those thinking of self-employment, investing in coworking shared office spaces, and developing their business ideas.

As of 2016, women represented 58% of the newly self-employed. However, there are still challenges with ensuring genders are afforded the same platforms. Last year, research by Facebook found that members of business communities were twice as likely to forecast business growth, but only 50% of female founders were actually part of a business community.

The Beginnings of the She Can. She Did. Project

Fi Grayson achieved a First degree honours in International History and Politics and began a career in Conference Production. However, she became disillusioned and quit her day job to begin researching women who were achieving great things in their own businesses. She discovered that many articles on social media and google were limited and often painted an ‘easy’ picture of success. She couldn’t find anything that gave her the whole story so she started travelling the UK to interview many successful female entrepreneurs in order to discover the real trials and tribulations of running a business.

She Can. She Did. Website

The She Can. She Did. website interviews experienced female entrepreneurs about their successes and failures. The aim is to provide wannabe freelancers and self-employed women with a platform where they can find valuable and practical information about the struggles of starting a female-led business away from the ‘glamour’ that is often presentedon social media.

The website helps new self-employed women become the entrepreneurs that they aspire to be, whether that is through understanding the pitfalls of starting their own business or gathering useful advice about renting office space, managing finances, juggling home-life and creating realistic business plans.

Grayson’s platform has also helped already successful business women gather even more exposure and useful contacts for future growth.

The Midweek Mingle

She Can. She Did. recently expanded its reach to live events. The Midweek Mingle, is a chance for aspiring female entrepreneurs to connect with a panel of successful solo business women. The events are made of live speakers and sponsored by large brands, enabling businesswomen to network and inspire each other face-to-face.

The Midweek Mingle started in London with a run of three events and now She Can. She Did. has been sponsored by Xero to take its series of events on tour to a number of locations across the UK (such as Bristol, Brighton and Manchester). Grayson has also launched the Midweek Jingle - designed especially for self-employed women to experience the Christmas party that they usually miss out on as a sole trader or small business.

Impact

Fiona Grayson has used her own business-minded assets to provide other women with a spotlight to showcase their achievements and broadcast their business struggles. Ultimately, this has helped to inspire the next generation of business role models and entrepreneurs.
