Our green commitment

We’re constantly striving to do more to honour our green commitment, and with the help of First Mile, we’re bettering ourselves every year!

We at The Brew are committed to making our office space as environmentally friendly as possible, and are determined to make recycling simple and straightforward for our members.

We are delighted to work with First Mile who operate a zero-to-landfill recycling model meaning anything that can’t be recycled is used to produce energy-from-waste. They also provide simple and flexible recycling solutions by allowing recycling to be collected together – the only thing that needs to be separated out is food waste – everything else goes into one bin taking the stress out of working out where to put what.

Another benefit to working with First Mile is that they only charge for collection on a pay-as-you-go basis. As our office space is so flexible, so is the amount of recycling we produce. We pay for what we produce and schedule collections when needed, avoiding wasting resources.

We’re also taking other steps to reduce our carbon footprint by installing energy-efficient technology in coworking space, and encouraging cycling to help reduce gas emissions, by installing bike racks at our Eagle House location.

How to create a more sustainable workplace

As it’s not all about us, here are some handy tips on how you can become more eco-friendly in your office…

  1. Turn the lights out when no one is using the room. Whether it’s a toilet, meeting room or the kitchen, flip the switch on the way out.
  2. Encourage your staff to use recycling bins if you don’t have a dedicated recycling service like First Mile. Make sure they’re obviously placed and perhaps put some signs up to reinforce you want to do more to recycle rubbish.
  3. Do what you can to use less paper. Do you really need to print that document, or can it be shared digitally? If you can go almost entirely paperless, that’s fantastic!

What we do towards recycling in the workplace

From ensuring we’ve got good tech in place to the little things like switching lights off – over the past few years we’ve worked hard to become as green as possible. We take our environmental responsibilities seriously and are committed to using recyclable products and minimising waste.

Using one of our offices as an example, Westland Place is fully equipped with the latest energy-saving technology including state-of-the-art aircon and airflow systems, infrared sensor lights, energy-efficient LED panels and a Cat 6 lighting system with Power over Ethernet technology. So not only does this mean we’re doing our bit towards reducing our carbon footprint, but as a member of ours, it also boosts your company’s environmental and sustainability credentials, and what’s not to love about that?

What we have achieved so far

Since we brought recycling partners First Mile on board, it’s made recycling much easier for us and we’re pretty proud of what we’ve achieved so far!

For example, in 2018, we recycled 5,665kg of rubbish, saved 59 trees and produced 4,500kg of waste which was converted to energy (approx. 2400 kWh).

How do we help members to be more green?

By being a member of The Brew, the work that we’re doing to improve our office recycling reflects on your business too. We do of course ask you to help us out a little, like not putting food waste into the recycle bins, and to turn lights off in meeting rooms when you’re finished, but we think that’s a small price to pay for being part of a larger green movement.
