Reset and Refocus: Breathwork can help us all breathe easier

In the middle of a busy workday, you’re probably not thinking about how you are breathing. Emails are piling up, meetings are running back-to-back, and concentration is becoming a distant memory. Without realising it, many people spend their day taking shallow breaths that keep the body in a low-level stress response.

Breathwork offers a simple way to change that. No equipment, no prior experience, and no special environment required. Just you and your breath.

What is breathwork?

Breathwork is the practice of consciously changing the way you breathe to support your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Unlike meditation, where breath is often observed, breathwork actively guides breathing patterns to influence how the nervous system responds to stress and focus. Research shows controlled breathing can help activate the body’s relaxation response, lowering stress hormones and encouraging calm and clarity.

At its core, breathwork works because breathing is one of the few bodily functions we can control voluntarily while also influencing automatic systems like heart rate and stress regulation. When breathing slows and deepens, the body shifts into a “rest and digest” state, helping us feel more balanced and grounded.

Why breathing well matters at work

Modern working life asks a lot from our attention and energy. We have to endure long periods at desks, constant notifications, and cognitive overload – it’s no wonder that you’re feeling tense or mentally foggy.

Intentional breathing techniques can help counter this. Studies link breathwork to improved focus, emotional regulation, and reduced anxiety, alongside better sleep and resilience to stress.

Even a few minutes of guided breathing can:

  • Calm racing thoughts before a meeting
  • Restore focus during an afternoon slump
  • Reduce physical tension held in the body
  • Support clearer decision-making

Perhaps most importantly, breathwork is practical. These are tools you can use anywhere, whether at your desk, between calls, or on your commute home.

Experience breathwork at The Brew

We understand that many of us are living through anxious times, and The Brew is actively working to look after the well-being of our members. Our Lunch and Learn workshops offer insights and tools to manage difficulties and make the most of life, at work and at play. We were excited to explore breathwork because of its accessibility. You do not need to dedicate hours to it in order to see benefits. Short, regular sessions can be enough to help regulate stress and improve mental clarity over time.

Last month, The Brew hosted a Lunch & Learn: Breathwork session at Eagle House, encouraging our members and guests to step away from their desks and explore breathing techniques together.

Led by experienced practitioner Emma Ball, the 30-minute session introduced accessible practices designed to calm the mind, release built-up tension, and gently reset energy levels. Participants were guided through simple exercises that required no previous experience.

Our workshop focused on practical tools that could easily fit into your busy work schedule. We explored how small shifts in breathing patterns can influence focus, mood, and overall well-being, leaving with techniques they could return to whenever work begins to feel overwhelming.

What stood out most was the simplicity of the experience. In just half an hour, the group created a collective moment of stillness in the middle of a busy workday. Many participants reflected on how quickly intentional breathing helped them feel calmer and more present.

Sessions like this highlight how workplace wellbeing does not need to be complicated. Sometimes the most effective reset comes from slowing down together and reconnecting with something as natural as breath.

A moment to pause

When it’s constantly drummed into us that productivity is king, taking time to breathe can feel surprisingly powerful. Breathwork reminds us that well-being does not always require dramatic change and that sometimes it starts with something as simple as slowing down for a few intentional breaths.

Whether you are looking to improve focus, manage stress, or simply create a calmer rhythm in your day, breathwork offers an approachable place to begin.

Your next reset might already be with you. Just breathe.
